We are calling on Schweppes Australia to end their partnership with the Victoria Race Club and ditch their sponsorship of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Against a backdrop of expensive marketing campaigns that claim the Melbourne Cup to be universally loved, people are switching off from racing in droves and sponsors can feel the tide of public opinion turning.

In 2015, Schweppes Australia showed courage and compassion in its decision to completely cut ties with the greyhound racing industry. At the time they said they were ‘shocked and appalled’ by the cruelty. The same courage and compassion can be shown again for horses.

Greens Deputy Leader and Spokesperson for Animal Welfare, Senator Mehreen Faruqi has written to Schweppes Australia, urging them to drop their sponsorship of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The horse racing industry is beyond repair. By saying ‘Nup to the Cup’ this year, and encouraging sponsors to do the same, we can ensure that horses are protected and the horse racing industry shut down for good.

Every 2 days, a horse is killed on a racetrack in Australia. This does not even account for the thousands killed off the track, plus the 10,000 horses who disappear off the records each year.

Every time you encourage people to ‘cheers’ with Schweppes at the Melbourne Cup Carnival and other Victoria Racing Club events, you are branding Schweppes with the whipping, beating, drugging and use of torturous tongue-ties and isolating confinement of horses.

This is standard practice in Australia’s horse racing industry.

In 2015, Schweppes showed courage and compassion in its decision to completely cut ties with the greyhound racing industry after the pervasive use of live baiting was exposed. Schweppes at the time said they were ‘shocked and appalled’ by the cruelty.

I ask you to show the same courage and compassion when it comes to the horse racing industry.

Racehorses face a terrifying fate when they are retired from racing, ending up in slaughterhouses and knackeries. Many horses that are bred for racing but never make it to the track often suffer the same fate.

More and more people are saying ‘Nup to the Cup’ every year as the awareness about the harms of gambling and animal cruelty increase and societal attitudes shift.

I urge you to end your sponsorship of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and your partnership with the Victoria Racing Club. Horse racing and greyhound racing are both gambling-fuelled cruelty and are rapidly losing their social licence. Just as Schweppes took a stand against greyhound racing, you must not turn a blind eye to the cruelty of horse racing.

We, your customers, will not be ‘cheersing’ to Schweppes until you do so.
